Coach – Caroline Cates

Caroline Cates is originally from Snellville, Georgia. She graduated from Brookwood High School, which had a great influence on her passion for dance and cultivated her love of dance education.

She graduated from the University of Georgia in 2015 with a Bachelor’s of Science in Health and Physical Education. During her feshman year at the University of Georgia, she continued her dance training and was a member of the 2010-2011 football dance team, The Georgettes. From 2012-2013, she was a member of the DanceFX Concert Dance Company located in Athens, GA that performs locally as well as state-wide. While in college, Caroline also became certified through Dance Masters of America Chapter 33, in both ballet and jazz. This past May (2019), she earned her Master’s Degree in Dance Education from the University of North Carolina, Greensboro. She has been dancing for 25 years and has studied with master teachers including Aldawna Morrison, Ramazan Bapov, Deneen Graham-Kerns, and Janet Lilly, to name a few.

Caroline is coming from Greater Atlanta Christian School, where she started the High School Dance program 5 years ago. She has served as the head coach of the competitive dance team for 8 years, and taught in the GAC School of Ballet the last 9 years. In addition to the multiple roles Caroline participated in at GAC, she has also collaborated on cross curricular performances, created a secondary chapter of National Honors Society for Dance Arts, directed summer dance camps, and has helped choreograph the High School Drama Department’s Shuler Musical in 2016, 2017 and 2018. In 2018, her choreography was nominated for best choreography through the Shuler Musical Awards. She currently is on the GHSA Dance Committee that has been working the last three years to sanction dance as a sport under the Georgia High School Association (GHSA) for the 2020-2021 school year. She has been teaching dance since she was in the 7th Grade and has a passion for pouring her knowledge and love of dance into young performers. Caroline cannot wait to get into the Barrow Arts and Science Academy dance studio and start dancing with her new students!

Caroline lives in Athens (Go Dawgs!) with her husband Matt, who is also a teacher and coach at Oconee County High School.
